Police have been searching since 2019 for a mystery racing car driver who has been spotted on several occasions speeding down the motorway in the Czech Republic. The illegal joyrider, decked out in full racing gear, was arrested at his home on Sunday after he was followed there from a gas station where he had stopped to fill up his F1-like vehicle.

The driver now faces a fine of up to roughly $480 for driving the car, which doesn’t have headlights, indicators or number plates, on the motorway. He could also have his driver’s license suspended for up to a year.

Who is the mystery driver?

According to local media, the person taken into custody is a 51-year-old who has not been publicly identified. Police tracked him down to a residence in the village of Buk, located less than 40 miles from the capital Prague after being alerted by other motorists.

Initially, the individual refused to get out of the car, telling law enforcement that they were trespassing on his property. However, he eventually relented and was led away by the officers on the scene to face questioning at the police station. He tested negative for alcohol and drugs.

Police had previously spoken to the owner of the racing car, described as a Ferrari Formula 1 car reports the BBC, it is actually a GP2 Series Dallara. However, the person denied driving it, and police couldn’t prove that it was that individual who was spotted driving the vehicle as the driver was wearing a helmet when they were seen in the car.

Similarly, in other videos that have surfaced online, the driver has always been wearing a helmet, stymieing authorities attempts to identify the individual behind the wheel. That is until now, putting an end to his joyriding days.
