After making a big splash mid-season last year, it’s been an extremely quiet offseason for the Golden State Warriors. This is largely due to one major roadblock, which doesn’t appear to be getting taken care of anytime soon.

The Warriors still have multiple roster spots to fill and have been linked to numerous free agents. However, there is one thing that they need to attend to first. That being working out some sort of deal for restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga.

Kuminga has has a bumpy tenure with the Warriors, and things haven’t changed this summer. Following failed contract negotiations and trade efforts, the two sides still remain at odds.

Kuminga hasn’t been alone, as its been a tough summer for restricted free agents in general. That said, some of his counterparts across the league have managed to work out agreements.

In recent weeks, Cam Thomas returned to the Brooklyn Nets on the qualifying offer and Josh Giddey inked a $100 million deal with the Chicago Bulls. This leaves Kuminga as one of the latest notable names on the market.

Although other restricted free agents have agreed to deals, Warriors insider Monte Poole doesn’t expect it to have an impact on Kuminga’s situation.

“The stalemate between Kuminga and the Warriors remains precisely that, but they are steadily creeping toward resolution if only because every minute brings them closer to an Oct. 1 deadline,” Poole wrote. “The initial reaction to Cam Thomas returning to the Brooklyn Nets and Josh Giddey re-signing with the Chicago Bulls is to ponder whether that impacts the Warriors and Kuminga. The answer is, um, complicated.”

Kuminga has shown promise with the Warriors, but hasn’t fully emerged as a high-end talent for them since being drafted seventh overall in 2021. Through his first four seasons, the 22-year-old is averaging 12.5 PPG, 4.0 RPG, and 1.8 APG.
