Olivier Rodrigue could never quite make it in the NHL, and now the former Oilers goaltender has had his contract in the KHL officially terminated.

The Edmonton Oilers have had troubles finding a star goaltender for quite some time, and in recent years, the team had hopes that Olivier Rodrigue could potentially step up and make an NHLer of himself.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to do that, as he posted a 3.12 GAA and an .897 save percentage for the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors a year ago, and despite making his NHL debut with the team, he wasn’t able to keep his spot this off-season.

Rodrigue has his KHL contract terminated shortly after signing there

This off-season, the 25-year old signed with Barys Astana in the KHL in Russia, but before making an appearance, the team announced in a statement that his contract had been terminated.Due to an injury sustained during training, Olivier Rodrigue underwent an in-depth medical examination, which revealed an injury requiring additional treatment. After discussions with the hockey player, a decision was made to terminate Rodrigue’s current contract with Barys by mutual agreement.

The club thanks Olivier for the work he has done and wishes him success in his future career!

Unfortunately, it appears as though an injury sustained during training was the reason for the move, with the two parties coming to a mutual agreement to terminate his contract.

It’s unclear what the future in hockey holds for Rodrigue, but at 25-years of age, he’s got time to turn things around and find a role somewhere, and whether that’s Europe or North America, this isn’t the last we’ve heard of the former second-round pick.
