Morgan Rielly was reportedly unhappy with his 2024-25 season, which led to a tremendous amount of work on himself over the summer, per Leafs coach Craig Berube.

It’s no secret that Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly wasn’t quite as potent offensively as he had been in previous years.

Rielly struggled to initially adjust to the defensive system under new Leafs coach Craig Berube in 2024-25, watching his production dip to just 41 points across 82 games — a far cry from the 58 points he produced in 10 less games in 2023-24.

According to Berube, the Leafs believe they need more out of Rielly in 2025-26, and he believes Rielly was beginning to turn it on later in the season and throughout the playoffs.

Yeah, we do. Again, the offense side of things started to come later in the season. He wanted to focus on the defensive side of things and be a better defensive player who is more physical and reliable back there. Maybe we took his instincts away from him a little bit. They started to come back.

Berube also confirmed that Rielly has done a tremendous job this summer of getting into much better shape and working on the offensive aspects of his game once again, which should lead to an increase in his production.

I’ll tell you this: Morgan had a hell of a summer. He looks great. He is in great shape. I don’t know if it is the best shape he has ever been in, but I think it is pretty close. He took it to heart last year. He wasn’t happy with his season offensively. He put in some great work this summer. I think we are going to see a different player.
