The New York Yankees have not seen great play out of Anthony Volpe this season. The third-year shortstop has struggled defensively, while his offense has also failed to get any better.
Volpe entered Friday leading the American League in errors. The team recently announced that he has been playing through a shoulder injury and received a cortisone shot.
Volpe has not been in the lineup for three straight games as he recovers from his recent injection. However, this is an injury that he has dealt with since May. Yankees GM and senior vice president Brian Cashman announced what the next steps for Volpe could look like.

“As of right now, no, but I wouldn’t rule it out either,” Cashman responded to a question about Volpe needing surgery in the offseason, per MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. “They’ll just repeat imaging and see where he’s at. As of right now, there’s no surgery recommended. There’s not even an IL recommended.”
Volpe’s throwing errors have been a major talking point this season. He has not attributed the errors to his shoulder, but it is possible it is playing a role. Volpe is a former Gold Glove Award winner, so such a drastic falloff defensively is shocking.
Aaron Boone has remained consistent in calling Volpe the team’s starting shortstop, so it is safe to assume that he will reclaim the starting job when he is ready to play again. Jose Caballero has played well in his place. In fact, some fans want Boone to commit to Caballero down the stretch after Volpe has continued to struggle.
