Miguel Delaney: Inside Football

Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford will square off in one of the biggest fights of the century tonight, as they clash at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

So much is on the line in the 71,000 capacity venue, home to the Raiders NFL team: Canelo’s undisputed super-middleweight titles are up for grabs, while Crawford risks his unbeaten record, and each man wagers his legacy.

Mexico’s Canelo (63-2-2, 39 knockouts) is seen by many as this generation’s face of boxing, while American Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) is arguably the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world.

In tonight’s main event, which streams live on Netflix along with the undercard, Crawford ambitiously goes two divisions above his career-highest weight so far, challenging Canelo at 168lb. If Crawford can triumph, he will become the first three-weight undisputed champ of the modern era.

Like 35-year-old Canelo, Crawford is a four-weight world champion already, but the 37-year-old could confirm himself as this era’s greatest boxer with a victory in Vegas. Meanwhile, Canelo’s pride is on the line against the naturally smaller man, along with all the major belts in the super-middleweight division.

Follow updates and results below, as The Independent provides live coverage from Las Vegas.

Mohammed Alakel vs Travis Kent Crawford: Round five

Another clean left hook from Alakel, this one more of a swiping effort. Crawford tried to lean back to lessen the impact, and credit to him: he’s still taking Alakel’s best shots well.

Boos as Terence Crawford is shown on the big screens

Terence Crawford was just shown on the big screens, arriving at the stadium.

A healthy chorus of boos for tonight’s main-event challenger.

Also, the crowd is slowly filling out now. I’d say we’re at about 60 per cent in Allegiant Stadium.

Mohammed Alakel vs Travis Kent Crawford: Round four

Oh! Best shot of the fight, as Alakel times a counter left hook that rattles the jaw of Crawford.

The American does well to get on with things; that might have buckled other boxers.

Another left hook has Crawford off balance, but still he gets after his Saudi opponent.

Now a right cross tags Crawford hard. He tries to fire back but finds Alakel out of his reach.

Mohammed Alakel vs Travis Kent Crawford: Round three

Crawford is keeping a high guard, but it’s been far from impervious to Alakel’s offence.

A few straight shots split that guard now, while Crawford’s output isn’t exactly troubling Alakel.

Still, Crawford comes forward and tries to build some momentum.

Good variety of counter shots from Alakel, who does well to raise his right hand just in time to block a spiteful hook.

Mohammed Alakel vs Travis Kent Crawford: Round two

A quickfire one-two is on point for Alakel, this time to the head of Crawford.

Crawford comes back with a bit more activity of his own, and he does get through with a right hook upstairs. But he eats a body uppercut from Alakel in the process.

Crawford is bearing down on the Saudi, but he gets his head snapped back before suffering a hook and uppercut.

Decent jabs from Alakel, who is still working on the back foot. Still, better initiative from Crawford in this round.

Mohammed Alakel vs Travis Kent Crawford: Round one

Ten rounds scheduled here. Both men stand orthodox.

Well-timed jabs from Alakel 21, in the early going, and the face of 22-year-old Crawford already looks reddened.

A winging right hook from Alakel gets around the guard of the American, who then absorbs a one-two to the body.

It’s been all Alakel so far, and the young Saudi looks very relaxed.

Main card begins with Mohammed Alakel vs Travis Kent Crawford

Here’s how the main card looks, from the main event working backwards:

Canelo Alvarez (C) vs Terence Crawford (undisputed super-middleweight titles)

Callum Walsh vs Fernando Vargas Jr (super-welterweight)

Christian Mbilli vs Lester Martinez (super-middleweight)

Mohammed Alakel vs Travis Kent Crawford (lightweight)

So, it’s Alakel vs Crawford up first.

Attendance update as main card looms

The Independent is in place at Allegiant Stadium.

An impressive light show just took place, with each seat blinking a bright blue in time with an upbeat music package.

The roof is closed, with red light washing over the stands.

I’d say the 71,000-capacity venue is about 40-50 per cent full.
