Former 1st-Round Pick Suddenly Becomes Available and May Fit in Well with the Maple Leafs

The Chicago Blackhawks have suddenly decided to shop a former 1st round pick, according to a report, and the Maple Leafs could be a potential fit.
For the past few years, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ biggest playoff struggle has been scoring when it matters most. While last year showed slight improvement, it’s clear the forward group as a whole still hasn’t lived up to expectations.
Depth hasn’t been the only issue; it’s been that no one has consistently stepped up. That reality means change is needed throughout the lineup and not just with the departure of Mitch Marner.
The Leafs have added size, grit, and power-forward types this offseason, but the team still lacks a true scoring touch in the middle of the lineup. That’s where the Chicago Blackhawks could provide an intriguing option.
Lukas Reichel, drafted in 2021, has yet to find his stride in Chicago. With just 8 goals and 22 points in 70 games, he hasn’t developed into the player the Hawks envisioned. At just $1.2M, Reichel is cheaper than Nick Robertson’s $1.83M contract, and Toronto, like most teams, is trying to scrounge for all the cap space they can get. A one-for-one swap would not only save Toronto cap space but also give both young forwards a much-needed change of scenery.
Robertson, at 5’9», has struggled to carve out a permanent role, while Reichel brings more size and raw skill. For the Blackhawks, Robertson’s more complete game could fit better into their rebuild, while the Leafs would get a bigger forward they could mold into their system.
A Robertson and Reichel trade wouldn’t just be a swap of players on the fringe of their lineups; it could be a fresh start for both players and potentially give the Leafs the secondary scoring punch they’ve long been missing.
