MONTREAL – Luke Rosettani scored twice on penalty kicks, including the game-winner in the 90th minute, as McGill outlasted Concordia 3-2 in a heated RSEQ men’s soccer rivalry match, Sunday afternoon at Concordia Stadium.
The Redbirds stormed out to a two-goal lead in the opening half. Midfielder Elias Farhat broke the deadlock in the 27th minute on a setup from Samuel Armstrong-Giroux, before Rosettani buried his first penalty kick just four minutes later.
The Stingers replied quickly, cutting the deficit to 2-1 on a penalty strike from Mahdi Djellab in the 35th. They pulled even early in the second half when Razvan Colici converted another PK in the 58th minute.
With the score tied and five minutes of stoppage time looming, McGill weathered a furious Concordia push, highlighted by Stingers captain Lundon Durand-Browne’s 30-yard blast that rookie midfielder Eloi Versieux blocked. The decisive moment came at the other end when Rosettani, a 6-foot-2 striker from Hamilton, Ont., calmly slotted home his second penalty to secure McGill’s first win of the campaign.
Goalkeeper Ludovyck Ciociola, a physical education senior from Montreal, went the distance for the Redbirds, allowing two goals in 90 minutes. His counterpart, Massimo Schiavoni, conceded three in a full outing for Concordia. Shots and saves were not made available at source.
The result improved McGill’s record to 1-2-1, while the Stingers dropped to 1-3-0. Next up, McGill travels to Sherbrooke on Sept. 19 for an 8 p.m. kickoff, while Concordia hosts Laval earlier that evening at 6 p.m.
