The Maple Leafs have been looking to add to their top-six, and a report from TSN’s Darren Dreger suggests they could look at a controversial forward to fill the role.
As we move into the latter half of September and the start of training camp, the Leafs still have plenty of work to do to finalize their roster ahead of the start of the 2025-26 regular season.
On Monday morning, TSN’s Darren Dreger joined the TSN 1050 “First Up” crew to discuss a wide range of topics, including the ongoing Anthony Stolarz negotiations, the decisions coming up involving Nick Robertson, Calle Jarnkrok and David Kampf, and the potential to add a few PTO’s.
Another topic that was discussed by Dreger was the potential for the Leafs to add a very controversial name to the roster in Dillon Dube, who was recently cleared of all charged following a lengthy trial linked to the infamous Hockey Canada scandal of 2018.
“I wouldn’t be at all surprised if [Brad] Treliving and the Toronto Maple Leafs put their hat in the ring and take a decent swing at Dillon Dube. There’s history there, of course, that goes back to the Calgary days between Dube and Brad Treliving. It doesn’t mean that Toronto is a frontrunner. It doesn’t mean that the Leafs are going to land Dillon Dube, but I mentioned earlier about their want for a top-six forward. The assumption that a player like that could come in and fill that role.”
It’s important to highlight the fact that Dreger is not saying that the Leafs are for sure pursuing Dube, but his name being out there in connection to Toronto is certainly something worth tracking as the summer comes to an end and as we roll into the fall.
Dube will not be eligible to sign with any team until October 15th, and will not be eligible to play NHL games until December 1st.
