Nicolas Roy spoke with the media in Toronto on Monday, and when asked about early standouts ahead of training camp, he identified one surprising Maple Leafs veteran as someone who blew him away.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are taking part in their annual golf tournament on Monday ahead of the start of training camp this week, and they have already held multiple “captains skates”, which are informal practices run by the team’s leadership group.

Roy, who took part in the captains skates this past week, revealed that Rielly was noticeably better than he recalls from playing against the longest-tenured Leaf for a number of years.

“Morgan Rielly’s been buzzing in those skates. I wasn’t there before. I’ve seen him, played against him, but he’s been a really good.”

Rielly was reportedly very unhappy with how his game looked last season, and really wanted to put himself in a position to enjoy a lot more success in 2025-26.

Kudos to Rielly for recognizing that his game wasn’t quite up to par with where it needed to be and actually doing something to improve over the summer. The Maple Leafs will be a better team for it.
