ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Taking on its first ranked opponent of the season did not faze the RV Washington University in St. Louis men’s soccer team, as the Bears knocked off No. 7 North Park 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Francis Olympic Field. With the win, the Bears improve to 5-1 on the season.
It was a quiet first half on the scoreboard for the first 40 minutes.
Both teams forced play deep in the offensive side of the pitch. However, it was in the 43rd minute when senior Zach Susee took a corner kick. It was knocked out but he eventually found the ball and passed it into the box, right in front of the goal where junior Quentin Gomez right-footed the ball into the back of the net, giving WashU a 1-0 lead.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, the Vikings were able to score a similar goal to the Bears’ from the first half when Emil Svenander scored in the 55th minute to tie the score up at 1-1.
It was late in the 64th minute when first-year Wole Adeoye was fouled in the box, which allowed junior Ethan Wirtschafter to take a penalty kick. Wirtschafter fired a shot to the left as the Vikings’ goalie dove to the right, and the Bears took a 2-1 lead.
Both teams remained aggressive, again forcing play in their offensive zone, but saves by both goalies kept anyone from adding to the scoreboard as WashU secured the 2-1 win.
WashU outshot NPU 9-7 while the Vikings had the 4-2 lead in shots on goal. The Bears were also able to force six corner kicks to just three for North Park.
Junior Cal L’Hommedieu played all 90 minutes in goal, making three saves to earn his fifth win of the season.
WashU is back on the field on Saturday, Sept. 20 when it hosts Wheaton. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. Prior to the start, the Bears will honor their five seniors with a special recognition ceremony on the field.
