CHI Health Orthopedic Surgeon has been ringside with Omaha boxing legend Bud Crawford for a decade

  • September 17, 2025

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Omaha’s own Terrence “Bud” Crawford made history Saturday. He became the first person to capture three unified division titles when he beat Canelo Alvarez over the weekend. First Alert 6 sat down with an important member of his team.

Dr. Brian Conroy, a CHI Health Orthopedic Surgeon has known Bud Crawford since he was a teenager. Dr. Conroy is a boxer himself and was approached by a patient years ago to be a ringside physician for amateur boxing. It was there he met a teenaged Crawford.

“Got to know him during his young teenage years and saw him grow up and go through the national Golden Gloves,” said Dr. Conroy.

When Crawford turned pro, Dr. Conroy was asked to his team’s physician. At first he was hesitant because of the travel required for the job.

“I saw how hard he was working, he was really diligent. He dedicated himself so I said sure I will help you if you are going to work that hard,” said Dr. Conroy.

Since then, Dr. Conroy has been ringside with Crawford. During fight night, he operates as Crawford “cut doctor.” He helps treat ring injuries like cuts, swelling, broken noses, etc.

Saturday, Crawford was headbutt by Alvarez which stopped the fight for a brief time. “It was a little bit deep but the key thing with Terrance is he did not get hit there again,” said Dr. Conroy. The cut required five stitches post fight and Alvarez apologized immediately after landing the blow.

Dr. Conroy got to walk out with the team as he does every fight. He tells First Alert 6, the environment at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas was exciting. “There was a few Canelo fans that were, ya know, hollering but it was, it was very exciting, very positive environment,” said Dr. Conroy. Nice full crowd. Terrance was there to work, Canelo was there to work.”

The fight between Crawford and Alvarez went the full 12 rounds. When the final bell rang, Crawford won by unanimous decision.

“This was the pinnacle of what is possible in boxing and I think that is why he was down on one knee at the end of the fight,” explained Dr. Conroy. “Because it was so special to have the opportunity to be in that arena, to fight Canelo. The best guy he could possibly fight in the world to fight. Come up the weight classes and do it, and stay health getting there. And he did it masterfully.”

Dr. Conroy tells First Alert 6, some of his colleagues said he looked like a proud dad when Crawford won. “It is just a great honor to be on Terrence’s team, he is just a wonderful person,” he said. “It is a big family, really take care of each other and help each other, everybody elevates each other together.”
