Hailing from Petrolia, Ontario, Cody “The Best Fisherman in MMA” Chovancek has been awarded a UFC contract after his knockout victory on Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS).

Weighing in at 135 pounds, the Canadian bantamweight entered the fight undefeated (8-0) against Raphael Uchegbu (10-2). Chovancek took momentum early with a powerful elbow that would drop Uchegbu, leading to a knockout punch from Chovancek in the third round to finish the fight.

Growing up in small town Petrolia, 27-year-old Cody said there wasn’t much to do but “fish and fight”. Chovancek started learning mixed martial arts at the age of 16 and had his first fight in August 2016. Prior to his DWCS appearance, Chovancek defended his title at Unified MMA 62 back in May.

Cody trains at the Niagara Top Team gym in St. Catherines, Ontario with fellow UFC teammates Mike Malott, and Jasmine Jasudavicius who are both set to fight in UFC: Vancouver, October 18.

Despite not having a fight announced yet, the UFC could look to add Chovancek to the card either as a new fight or as a replacement fighter.
