Liverpool once again demonstrated their sheer will to win as they secured dramatic victory over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday evening. Arne Slot’s side were two goals ahead early on through Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah but needed an injury-time Virgil van Dijk header to seal a 3-2 triumph after Marcos Llorente struck twice for the visitors.

The result ensured the Reds enjoyed the perfect start to their Champions League campaign and extended their run of wins to five in all competitions.

But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes (and a bit more) at Anfield

Simeone gotta Simeone

For better or worse, there’s nobody quite like Diego Simeone. And long before his late red card, the Atletico Madrid boss was annoying people in trademark fashion at Anfield.

It didn’t take long before Liverpool boss Arne Slot was on to Simeone’s tendency to veer a long way from his technical area, regularly in the ear of the fourth official in an effort to address the matter.

Not that it made much difference. When Liverpool substitute Conor Bradley prepared to take a throw-in during the second half, Simeone was so close to the right-back that he may as well have chucked the ball back into play himself.

No Marcos respect

Marcos Llorente’s delight at scoring twice at Anfield five years ago was such he ended up naming his dog after the stadium. So who knows what he’ll be calling his next pet after another brace on Merseyside.

The scoreboard operator, though, had a bit of an issue recognising the latest achievement of the Atletico Madrid utility man.

Having signified a goal, the screens at Anfield initially refused to register it had happened with the scoreline remaining 2-1 until a good while after the game had restarted. Ignorance is bliss, so they say.

Hugo in tune

Hugo Ekitike is fast becoming popular among Liverpool supporters, helped in no small part by his catchy chant. Even if, by any normal standards, it should be banished from the songbook forever.

Fortunately, not all tunes are so grating. And Ekitike discovered that for himself when he was warming up alongside Joe Gomez near the Kop during the first half.

After a blast of the striker’s ditty, the home support began belting out the defender’s far more acceptable song. The smirk on Ekitike’s face as he looked over his shoulder to his team-mate suggests it met with the France international’s approval.

Power of Anfield

For those unable to view the game either on television or in person, there was an amusing moment on the airwaves. BBC Radio 5 Live were broadcasting Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat at Bayern Munich when they went over to Anfield following Van Dijk’s winner.

However, the noise was so loud from the Anfield crowd celebrating another dramatic decider they had to cut back to the Allianz Arena.

A few moments later, they returned to Merseyside so listeners could be informed as to what happened. Not that they hadn’t guessed already, of course.
