Chatham’s Bridget Carleton and the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx will begin their WNBA semifinal Sunday in Minneapolis.

They’ll face either the New York Liberty or Phoenix Mercury in the best-of-five series.

Carleton had 12 points and two rebounds Wednesday as the Lynx beat the Golden State Valkyries 75-74 in San Jose to complete a two-game sweep of their quarter-final. She was 4-of-6 on three-pointers.

The Lynx rallied from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

“I’m just happy we got the dub,” Carleton said. “It’s hard to play in this arena. They play hard. Their fans were out. But, where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

Stonehouse joins Griffith on Oilers

Forwards Seth Griffith of Wallaceburg and Brady Stonehouse of Blenheim are at the Edmonton Oilers’ training camp this week.

The Oilers begin their eight-game pre-season schedule Sunday with split-squad games against the Flames in Edmonton and Calgary.

Griffith, 32, is in his sixth season in the Oilers’ system. He was the leading scorer last season on their top farm team, the American Hockey League’s Bakersfield Condors.

Stonehouse, 21, is starting his first full pro season after completing his Ontario Hockey League career last spring. He signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Oilers as a free agent in October 2023.

Also, Grande Pointe’s Deni Goure was not invited to the Carolina Hurricanes’ main camp after attending their rookie camp.

The Chatham Soccer Club under-13 girls won silver medals in the Elgin Middlesex District Soccer League’s District Cup.

They beat Dorchester 4-3 in a shootout in their semifinal before losing to Woodstock 2-0 in the final.

Chatham placed fourth in the Tier 1 standings with a 6-4-2 record.

Chatham recently knocked off first-place and previously unbeaten Alliance 2-1 in the season finale despite not having an official goalkeeper.

Goalie Paige Dejaegher was injured the day before the makeup game, leaving Chatham with only 11 players and no substitutes. Sweeper Clodagh Wright dressed as the goalkeeper but played her regular position, returning to the penalty area when needed to make saves.

Defender Olivia Childs also saved two goals.

Alyssa Costa and Janee Chantler-Shadd-Gentry scored.

“The entire squad of girls all played their A game,” coach Meaghan Wright said.

Flanagan backstops Sharks to win

Adam Flanagan made 18 saves Wednesday in the Wheatley Omstead Sharks’ 4-1 win over the Amherstburg Admirals in the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Stobbs Division.

Xander Zanier, Jesse Mercier, Brandon Ferguson and Vito Alfano scored for the Sharks (2-1-0-0) at Wheatley Area Arena.

They’ll visit the Essex 73’s on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

LKSSAA basketball season tips off

Daphne Northcott scored 15 points in the Ursuline Lancers’ 73-50 loss to the St. Patrick’s Fighting Irish in Wednesday’s season opener in LKSSAA senior girls AA/AAA basketball.

Kinsey Cottingham and Alyssa Lee Hermitt added 14 apiece.

The defending AAA champion Irish led 28-10, 44-23 and 53-46 at the quarters at Ursuline.

At Petrolia, the Wallaceburg Tartans led 16-14 at halftime before losing to the Lambton Central Lancers 42-29.

At Forest, the McGregor Panthers lost to the North Lambton Eagles 51-35.

In junior AA/AAA, Ursuline edged St. Patrick’s 57-53, Lambton Central beat Wallaceburg 45-20, North Lambton clipped McGregor 24-9 and Northern defeated Great Lakes 40-14.

Tartans beaten in football opener

The Wallaceburg Tartans lost to the Lambton Central Lancers 39-14 in the LKSSAA senior football opener Wednesday in Petrolia.

Hunter Duncan led Lambton Central with four touchdowns. Names of the Tartans’ scorers were not available.
