A dangerous person alert that told Inuvik, Fort McPherson, and Tsiigehtchic residents to shelter in place following a shooting at the Inuvik airport was cancelled shortly before 6pm after the suspect was apprehended.
Inuvik mayor Peter Clarkson said RCMP told the town the suspect had been caught on the Dempster Highway and is currently in police custody.
A dangerous person advisory alert issued through Alertable at 2:16pm indicated RCMP were looking for an armed man who may be driving in a burgundy or red Ford truck. The alert was cancelled at 5:44pm.
Clarkson said he understood from speaking with residents who were at the Mike Zubko Airport at the time a woman was shot outside the building shortly before 1pm – a busy time at the airport with both inbound and outbound flights scheduled – at close range with a shotgun.
She has been taken to the hospital and her condition is unknown. The hospital was under lockdown all afternoon.
The shooter is understood to be known by the victim.
People in the three communities along Highway 8 were told to shelter in a secure location and be cautious about letting people into their homes during the five hours the man was at large. RCMP had also said in the alert not to approach anyone suspicious, and not to pick up hitchhikers.
RCMP have been approached for comment.
