When it comes to meeting targets for the transition to greener energy, we typically focus on a lack of financing or shortfalls in gigawatts of renewable sources. But wind turbines don’t install themselves — and the clean-energy sector is short of people with the right skills.

PricewaterhouseCoopers reckons that the UK faces a gap of around 200,000 workers to deliver on its decarbonization targets. Research by social media platform LinkedIn found that, globally, almost one-in-five jobs requiring climate-related expertise will lack qualified candidates by 2030 if current trends continue. While Britain’s need for engineers, welders and electricians is well documented, less has been said about the rising demand for expertise in geology and geophysics.
