The Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward (HSHPE) is pleased to announce that Belleville City Council has approved the updated service contract, ensuring strong and sustainable support for the animals and residents of our community.
As Belleville’s designated service provider, HSHPE fulfills the municipality’s legislated responsibility to provide shelter, care, and humane management of stray and surrendered animals. Each year, the organization responds to thousands of calls from residents, provides life-saving veterinary care, and helps animals find safe, loving homes.
“This decision demonstrates council’s commitment to animal welfare and to the health and wellbeing of our whole community,” said Melanie Cressman, Executive Director of HSHPE. “A fair service contract not only ensures that animals receive the compassionate care they need, but also supports public safety, prevents the spread of disease, and fosters
a stronger, kinder community.”
With this renewed contract, HSHPE can continue to deliver essential, high-quality services with greater stability, helping to bridge the funding gap that has placed the organization under financial strain for many years. While the contract supports a more sustainable path forward, donor generosity, volunteers, and fundraising remain critical to provide the full scope of care and programs that Belleville’s animals and families rely on.
Over the last decade, HSHPE has built a proven track record of service with Belleville, collaborating with residents, city officials, and other community partners to ensure humane animal care. This renewed agreement strengthens the foundation for even greater collaboration in the years ahead.
“Humane societies are at the core of healthy communities,” said Greg Sudds, board president of HSHPE. “By addressing stray animal populations, providing education, ensuring safe adoptions, and supporting local residents in crisis when they can no longer care for their pets, our work extends far beyond animal welfare. This contract affirms that when we invest in humane solutions, both ends of the leash benefit.”
