Lázaro Lorenzana Withdraws from WBC Silver Middleweight Title Defense
Lázaro Lorenzana will no longer defend his WBC Silver middleweight title on Saturday, July 26, in Chula Vista, California, where he was scheduled to face Argentine contender Brian Arregui.
During the WBC’s traditional “Martes de Café” gathering, WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán confirmed that Lorenzana was removed from the card due to serious complications related to weight cutting.
This case follows last weekend’s withdrawal of Ángel “Tashiro” Fierro and has raised significant concerns within the organization. In response, Sulaimán issued an urgent call to trainers, fighters, and teams to re-evaluate the methods used for cutting weight before a bout.
“Some of the practices being used are extremely dangerous to human health and are carried out by irresponsible individuals pretending to be fitness experts,” warned Sulaimán.
Among the practices he highlighted were the excessive consumption of distilled water and extreme heat exposure, both widely criticized as unsafe.
“They make fighters drink excessive amounts of distilled water and, on the final day, submerge them in boiling water. It’s a night of horror,” he stated.
Sulaimán also encouraged boxers to reach out directly to the WBC if they feel concerned or uncomfortable with the methods imposed by their trainers:
“If any boxer is worried about what their trainers are asking them to do to cut weight, come to the WBC,” he urged.
Finally, the WBC President stressed that the only safe and effective way to make weight is through a gradual, well-monitored process with professional oversight.
The health of fighters must come before any sporting outcome. Lorenzana’s case is a stark reminder of the real dangers of extreme weight cutting, and the WBC’s stance aims to foster a safer culture in professional boxing.
