Lacombe city council has tossed in another $9,000 to help complete a disc golf course.
The extra money boosts the city’s contribution to $18,000 for the Rosedale Valley Disc Golf Course on the Burman University grounds that is being built by the Lacombe Disc Golf Association.
It is expected to cost about $73,000 to finish the project, which was kickstarted by a group of volunteers in 2023. As work progressed, the cost of tee pads, landscaping, baskets and additional clearing came in higher than expected, which prompted the request for additional funding through Lacombe’s Community Builder Partnership Fund.
Lacombe County council has also agreed to double its contribution to $18,000, with the additional money to go towards maintenance costs for the 18-hole championship course.
The disc golf association has also lined up sponsors to help cover costs and has received donations from local businesses.
Coun. Thalia Hibbs said the course has already drawn many disc golfers.
“It’s really good to see that something like that is very popular and being used already,” said Hibbs.
A grand opening is set for Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.
The association says disc golf is becoming increasingly popular with more than 130 courses in Alberta. Lacombe disc golfers were faced with lengthy travels to find courses. The nearest are in Red Deer, Sylvan Lake, and near Buffalo and Gull Lakes.
