The discovery of three dead Cuvier’s beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) along the southern coast of the island of Crete within 24 hours has raised concerns among scientists and local authorities.

The first whale, measuring approximately 2.5 to 3 meters long, was found in the Monobouka area. Shortly after, a second whale washed ashore at Kalikovrechtis. A third whale was later discovered nearby.

Officials said the Ierapetra Port Authority is handling the case. A team of veterinarians was also mobilized after one whale was found alive.

The Hellenic Center for Marine Research (ELKETHE) said the situation does not fall under the jurisdiction of the local Aquarium. Scientists have contacted ARION, an organization specializing in marine mammal response. A representative from ARION confirmed four whales were involved – three dead and one alive.

ARION, in a statement, said the mass stranding of the whales prompted immediate response from veterinarians, members of the Hellenic Cetacean Society, HCMR biologists, and Port Authority officials.

All three deceased whales were either been found dead or died after reaching shore. Experts are conducting necropsies and collecting samples to determine the cause of death. ARION is also working with relevant ministries to investigate any events that may have contributed to the stranding.

The organization urged the public to remain calm, avoid approaching the animals due to health concerns, and rely solely on official information.

Any new strandings should be reported to the nearest port authority or directly to ARION.
