Matthew McConaughey is looking back at a time that he had to keep his mom Kay at arm’s length.
In a new interview, the 55-year-old Oscar-winning actor revealed that he took a nearly decade-long “hiatus” from his 93-year-old mom because she kept leaking stories about him to the press.
Keep reading to find out more…“We had about an eight-year period where I had to have short conversations with her on our Sunday phone calls because she was sharing a lot of that information,” Matthew told People.
“I’d tell her something on Sunday between son and mom, and Tuesday I’d read about it in the news or see it in the local paper,” he continued. “She couldn’t help herself.”
Kay confirmed that they “were on a hiatus” because of that.
“About eight years after that, I got stable enough with my own position and fame that I was like, ‘You know what? My mom can say whatever the hell she wants,’” Matthew added. “It’s much more fun now… I’d say we’re closer now.”
Matthew and Kay are so close now that they will be sharing the screen in the new movie The Lost Bus, which hits Apple TV+ on October 3. The survival thriller will also mark the acting debut of Matthew‘s 17-year-old son Levi!
