Bob Melvin’s time with the San Francisco Giants is over.

The team announced the firing of their manager on Monday, a day after the completion of an 81-81 season.

Melvin, 63, finishes his two-year tenure with a mark of 161-163 with his team missing the playoffs in both seasons.

“After careful evaluation, we determined that making a change in leadership was in the best interest of the team,” team president Buster Posey said in a statement. “The last couple of months have been both disappointing and frustrating for all of us, and we did not perform up to our standards. We now turn our focus to identifying a new leader to guide us forward.”

Melvin had one year remaining on his contract.

A three-time Manager of the Year, the Giants were the fifth team led by Melvin over his 22-year career. Prior to joining the Giants, Melvin served as manager with the Seattle Mariners (2003-2004), Arizona Diamondbacks (2005-2009), Oakland Athletics (2011-2021) and San Diego Padres (2022-2023).

A native of Palo Alto, CA, Melvin teams have reached the postseason on eight occasions. Twice his teams have reached the National League Championship Series, in 2007 with the D-Backs and in 2022 with the Padres.

For his career, Melvin has a record of 1,678-1,588 (.514). His 1,678 wins are 20th all-time.

Since winning three World Series titles in five years from 2010 to 2014, the Giants have reached the playoffs just twice in the past 11 seasons and have not been in the postseason since 2021.
