Who is Katie Taylor?
Katie Taylor’s story goes far beyond the boxing ring.
Born in Bray, Ireland, on July 2, 1986, Katie excelled from a young age as a multidisciplinary athlete. In her teens, she shone in football (soccer), a sport in which she wore the Irish national team jersey, playing 11 matches and scoring two goals.
At the club level, she was part of teams like St. Catherine’s and Peamount United, achieving the national treble—league, cup, and league cup—in 2010.
But it was in boxing where Taylor found her true destiny. Trained from childhood via her father’s tutelage, she reached the pinnacle of amateurism with a formidable career: five World Championships, six European titles, and the gold medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games, in the historic first edition of women’s boxing at the Olympic event.
She made her professional debut in 2016, and just one year later, she was a world champion. In 2019, she unified the WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO Lightweight titles, becoming the undisputed champion.
In 2023, she moved up to Super Lightweight and defeated Chantelle Cameron to win the WBC, IBF, and WBO belts, consolidating herself as a two-division champion.
Her rivalry with Amanda Serrano has been one of the most important of this era. Their first bout was held in April 2022 at Madison Square Garden, an unprecedented event that marked the first-ever female main event at that venue.
Taylor won by split decision. In 2024, the rematch took place in the United States, where she prevailed again, this time by unanimous decision.
The third and final chapter, the most technical of the three, took place last Friday, also in New York, United States, where Taylor won with scorecards of 97-93, 97-93, and 95-95, in a tactical fight showcasing distance control, precise counterattacks, and great ring intelligence.
Taylor reaffirmed herself as the undisputed Super Lightweight champion and once again demonstrated why she is one of the most important figures in the history of women’s boxing. Her fight was broadcast on Netflix, representing the first all-female fight card produced by the streaming platform.
With this triumph, Taylor not only closed a trilogy that is now a major part of boxing history but also reasserted her legacy as a pioneer, a two-division undisputed champion, and a key figure in the global evolution of women’s boxing.
