This past week had two emphatic Big Ten results as Michigan State put six goals up against #20 Wisconsin, while Illinois upset #18 Penn State in a 4-3 thriller. Izzy Engle continued her strong season with Notre Dame, and Furman’s goalkeeper Reese DeJong had a massive game, making 15 saves.
Team of the Week
Michigan State
The Spartans had two solid wins this past week. First, they had a comeback victory against Minnesota, scoring two goals in the second half to win 2-1. Then, over the weekend, Michigan State had an emphatic result on the road, putting up a 6-0 road win against #20 Wisconsin. These two results put the Spartans into a tie for second in the Big Ten standings and have scored the most goals in the conference.
Michigan State hosts #23-ranked Ohio State this Sunday.
Offensive Player of the Week
Izzy Engle – Sophomore – Midfielder/Forward – Notre Dame
Engle scored against North Carolina midweek and then added her third brace of the season against Clemson over the weekend. She also tallied an assist against the Tigers. With the four goal contributions this past week, the sophomore now has 14 on the year (11g/3a). Engle currently sits second in women’s Division I soccer with her 11 goals and has scored in five straight games.
Next up for Engle and the Irish is a home battle against Louisville.
Defensive Player of the Week
Lizzie Sexton – Senior – Louisville
Sexton led Louisville to a shutout victory this past weekend against Miami and also tallied an assist in the contest. The team captain has now led the Cardinals to nine clean sheets and their defense sits second in the ACC with only 6 goals allowed on the year.
The Cardinals’ defense will face its biggest test so far on the road against the #1-ranked Notre Dame.
Goalkeeper of the Week
Reese DeJong – Sophomore – Furman
DeJong carried Furman to victory this past weekend against Western Carolina, where she made 15 saves, including a penalty save. This shutout gives DeJong five for the season, and she currently has an 84.9% save percentage.
Next up for the Paladins is a road matchup against UNC Greensboro tomorrow.
Freshman of the Week
Ashlyn Adams – Forward – Illinois
Adams tallied two assists at home against #18 Penn State this past week. It was also the second time she has played the full 90 so far this season. The freshman forward now has three assists on the year, and has already made 10 starts, solidifying her role with the team.
Next up for Adams is a road matchup against Maryland on Sunday.
