Somba K’e Paddling Club coaches say they’re keen to build a junior rowing team in Yellowknife after spending time learning at a major national regatta.

While the territorial capital did not send athletes to August’s Canada Cup in London, Ontario, NWT-based coaches Lauren Hogan and Gillian Waugh were invited to attend.

The club says that marked the first territorial representation at the Canada Cup in its history.

Hogan and Waugh spent the event with some of the nation’s top coaches, officials and athletes “learning, connecting and bringing new knowledge back home to Yellowknife,” the club stated in a press release.

That included a trip to rowing manufacturer Hudson Boat Works to learn about repairing and maintaining the boats used in competition, known as racing shells.

“This was an amazing opportunity for us,” Hogan and Waugh were quoted as saying.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to attend Canada Cup and we can’t wait to bring what we’ve learned back to our athletes in Yellowknife.”

The club said the coaches are now “eager” to develop the city’s junior rowing team “as the territory continues to build its presence in the sport.”
