Wyoming HS Tennis No. 1 Doubles State Champions React in 2025

The tandems of Eva Gorsuch and Olivia Katschke from Thunder Basin and Eric Venn and Matt Brown of Sheridan prevailed as the No. 1 doubles state champions at the 2025 Wyoming High School Tennis State Tournament last weekend in Gillette. Both teams needed three sets to capture the title. The girls split the first two sets but took control in the third. The guys lost the first set and rallied to win the crown.

WyoPreps discussed winning it all with both doubles squads. Gorsuch and Katschke said controlling what they could control was the biggest key to their victory. They said that after they split sets, they took their play to a higher level. Chemistry was another key for that duo. For the Sheridan team, Brown and Venn felt it was deja vu from regionals and that their mental game carried them to the title. They said the second set was a turning point, described what they focused on, and how it all came together.

How the Champions Got to the Top

Katschke and Gorsuch had some battles on their way to the championship. They opened with a 6-0 and 6-0 victory over a team from Torrington. They ran into their cross-town rivals from Campbell County in Heibult/Haugen and got pushed to three sets, but prevailed 4-6, 6-2, and 6-2. In the semis, Olivia and Eva rolled past Ligocki/Venn of Sheridan, 6-1 and 6-3. They faced Cheyenne Central in the finals and beat them, 6-3, 4-6, and 6-1 to become the champs.

Brown and Venn started their march with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over a duo from Laramie. In the quarters, they topped Crecelius/Woods from Cheyenne East, 6-1 and 7-5. Against Schwab/Laing from Cody in the semifinals, Brown and Venn lost the first set in a tie-break but bounced back to win the match, 6-7 (3), 6-4, and 6-3. In the title match versus D’Amours/Freymann of Jackson, they dropped the first set but rallied again for a 1-6, 6-4, and 6-3 victory.
