Quinn Hughes and Thomas Müller have some company among the most recognizable athletes in Vancouver this week.

The NBA’s Dallas Mavericks have landed in Vancouver for training camp. They’re practicing at SFU in Burnaby and are beginning to get spotted at other locations around the city.

The Mavs will be practicing daily at SFU until Saturday, before they head back to Texas for their first preseason game on Monday.

Dallas isn’t the only NBA franchise that will be in Vancouver this month, as the Toronto Raptors and Denver Nuggets play a preseason game at Rogers Arena on Monday, Oct. 6.

A couple of Mavs were spotted outside of the confines of SFU, as D’Angelo Russell and Max Christie Jr. played a round of golf at Capilano Golf and Country Club in West Vancouver.

After a tough 2024-25 season, perhaps the Mavericks wanted to get out of the spotlight. They posted a 39-43 record last season and traded away Luka Doncic, one of the best players in the league.

However, they aren’t lacking star power, as Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson are all on the team. They also have 18-year-old star Cooper Flagg, who was selected first overall in the 2025 NBA Draft.

There are a couple of Canadians in the organization, including 34-year-old veteran Dwight Powell and assistant coach Jay Triano.

This is a homecoming for Triano, the former Toronto Raptors head coach. Triano is an SFU basketball legend, having his No. 12 retired by the school back in 1986.
