The accident at the 2025 Okanagan Granfondo contributed towards the organizer’s decision to stop hosting the race in the valley.
A female cyclist was killed and two others injured along White Lake Road, near Penticton, after colliding with an automobile on July 13, 2015.
On Thursday, Okanagan Granfondo executive director Jodi Cross announced the discontinuation of the 14-year old event.
“It is clear it is now time to step back, reflect on the last 14 years and plan for new opportunities in the sport leisure and endurance arena,” Cross said in a press release. The release says Okanagan Granfondo will shift its focus towards gravel cyclists and racing.
On Friday she was a guest on CBC Daybreak for an interview with Chris Walker.
“People will wonder if the fatal crash at this year’s event had any effect on this decision,” Walker said. “Did it?”
“I’d be lying if this year’s incident didn’t play a role,” Cross said. “It put an enormous strain on many of our volunteers and staff – which pales in comparison to the family, friends and fellow cyclists of those directly impacted.”
