A Toronto bar in a historic building is getting a new lease on life as it transforms into a new concept this October.
The Gladstone House‘s Melody Bar had been a pillar of West Queen West, taking on various appearances and lives over the years, for over two decades, when it suddenly and quietly closed its doors at the end of 2022.
Since then, the space at the historic property has sat dormant, collecting dust while the neighbourhood’s frequenters grew impatient waiting to learn whether Melody Bar would rise from the ashes, or whether it really was gone for good.
Alas, we finally have our answer, and it’s the latter, but it’s not all bad news.
A new chapter is on the horizon for the former Melody Bar, as it prepares to transform into Cassette, a refined take on the classic, retro diner, opening at the end of October.
If you’re expecting a typical greasy spoon, think again. Cassette is going to pack a serious punch in the style department, while still offering the easy-breezy air that makes diners so well-loved.
As for the food, you can expect a well-rounded suite of offerings that run the gamut from no-frills classics to more sophisticated dishes that suit every palate, no matter how discerning.
Picture the iconic Gladstone Burger, whose patty nearly doubles the bun in size, a sophisticated spin on Pigs in a Blanket, or elegant Pan-Fried trout in herb oil.
It’s all served within a warm, inviting room with communal seating, intimate booths and an overarching sultry vibe. New date night spot unlocked? We think yes.
“We wanted to create a space where you feel immediately welcome, whether you’re popping in for a casual martini, a celebratory dinner or sticking around for a dance party,” says Alicia Too, the Regional General Manager of both Gladstone House and The Broadview Hotel.
Staying true to its name, which invokes nostalgic musical memories, Cassette will also host a slew of live performances, from concerts to art shows.
Kicking things off with a bang, the restaurant will host a monthly drag and dinner show headlined by Toronto drag royalty (and former Canada’s Drag Race contestant) Tynomi Banks.
All in all, though the loss of Melody Bar still stings for those who loved it, Cassette is shaping up to be a formidable replacement, and we don’t have to wait much longer before we get to experience it for ourselves.
Cassette officially opens for business on Saturday, Oct. 25, with dinner service running from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., followed by a late-night snack menu, and all the while, an impressive cocktail program keeps the good times rolling.
