Cycling isn’t quite an all-year tourism segment in Mallorca, but it is near enough all year. There are two seasons – February to May and September/October – but there are some cycling tourists in the other months. The high summer isn’t ideal because of the high temperatures, but the main centres on the island, such as Playa de Muro, still do attract some cycling tourists.
The same can be said for November to January. While the resorts are mostly closed, some hotels do remain open, many of them now catering to cyclists. In the island’s interior, where there are small all-year establishments, consideration is likewise given to the cycling market.
The February to May season, with a far greater number of cyclists than in September/October, is bookended by major events. For professional teams, the Mallorca Cycling Challenge, which now features races for women as well as men, actually gets under way in late January. In April and May, there are Mallorca 312 and Ironman 70.3; some pros but mostly not.
Now in October, there is the Mallorca Masters Cycling event, which takes place the week after next. It starts on October 14 in Arenal. Meanwhile, the resorts most closely associated with cycling are busy. The Mallorca Hoteliers Federation says there is more or less 100% occupancy, and cycling is a reason why.
In resorts like Playa de Muro there are various cycling-related businesses. These clearly experience a dip from June to August, but a split season from February to October makes them viable. The autumn season doesn’t compare with the spring in terms of the number of cyclists, but it is significant nonetheless.
