RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Trailing by three goals at halftime, the Hawai’i women’s soccer team rallied in the second half with three unanswered goals to pick up a 3-3 draw at UC Riverside Sunday night.
Â
Nalani Damacion, Penny Noland and Alice Davidson all found the back of the net in the second half to give the Rainbow Wahine the largest come-from-behind effort in either a tie or win in program history.
Â
UH also earned a point in the Big West standings and their third draw of the conference season. It’s also the team’s seventh tie of the season – shattering the previous school record of four.
Â
Damacion got UH on the board with her second goal of the week, finishing off a through ball from izzy Ayala to make it 3-1 at the 58:09 mark. A little over eight minutes later, Penny Noland pulled Hawai’i within a goal when she put away a loose ball in front of the net off a corner kick for her first career goal, cutting it to 3-2 in the 67th minute.
Â
Davidson then delivered the equalizer in the 87th minute when she converted off a Damacion pass on a play that started on the UH back line with a Piper Bertani long ball.
Â
The Highlanders jumped in front from the get-go, scoring three times in the first 22 minutes. UCR’s Spenser Gonzales connected on a penalty kick after a UH foul in the box in the seventh minute before scoring off a free kick at the 15:45 mark to go up 2-0.
Â
Gonzales picked up a brace with a wild high-arching shot attempt that sailed over the outstretched arms of UH keeper Brianna Chirpich to make it 3-0 in the 22nd minute. The UH back line locked things down after that, setting the stage for the second-half comeback.
Â
It’s the third time this season that the Rainbow Wahine have erased a multi-goal halftime deficit to come back and earn a draw. UH also rallied from down 2-0 at halftime in nonconference ties at Pepperdine (Aug. 17) and vs. California Baptist (Aug. 31).
Â
The Rainbow Wahine return to Waipi’o Soccer Stadium for a three-match homestand beginning Thursday vs. Cal Poly at 6 p.m. (Spectrum Sports/ESPN+).
