Yana Santos has had a rough string of luck with opponents in the UFC missing their contracted weight limits. There was even an instance where an adversary missed the mark on the scales, but the pressure was reportedly put on Santos from the promotion to keep the fight intact. This was expressed by the fighter herself, as Santos recently mentioned this anecdote to MMA Fighting.
Delving into her experiences with feeling like she previously needed to acquiesce to the promotion’s demands despite her opponent being the one to not fulfill her end of the agreement in this regard, Santos said [via MMA Fighting],
“A couple of fights ago when my opponent missed a lot of weight and we were thinking should we take the fight or not, UFC made it very clear that the person who will be punished is me if I refuse to fight. So I’m not getting paid, I have a chance to be cut and all these things. It’s like the opponent who missed weight is [not] going to have a problem. It’s me that has problems. So I can’t see that as an option. It is what it is. If I want to keep my job, I have to fight.”
Yana Santos had another opponent fail on the scales at UFC 320
Yana Santos did not mention which fight she was specifically talking about in the above quote. But the fact that there are multiple examples to pick from paints a picture. Santos has had four out of seven mapped-out opponents acorss her latest round of fighting bookings not hit the mark on the scale that was agreed upon beforehand.
The most recent instance of this came from the proceedings last weekend as Macy Chiasson weighed in at 137.5 pounds ahead of her fight with Santos, and the former had to renege 25 percent of their fight purse for the miss. Santos ended up besting Chiasson on Saturday, October 4th on points. The victor asked for an apology related to the weight miss with Santos also saying that apology didn’t come from Chiasson or from anyone on her team.
The UFC 320 weigh-in frustrations from Friday for Santos inspired her to call for stiffer penalties to be dealt out to fighters who don’t fulfill this part of their professional obligations. The 35-year-old has had some opponents miss so egregiously that is almost encroaches into another division as Chelsea Chandler hit 141 pounds for their contracted bantamweight bout last year.
