Coco Gauff booked her place in the quarterfinals of the Wuhan Open after earning another dominant straight-sets victory.

Gauff overcame home hope Zhang Shuai, 6-3, 6-2 in under an hour to advance to the last eight of the WTA 1000 event.

The American is off to a strong start in her second tournament of the Asian swing, having already clinched a 6-1, 6-0 win in her opening clash against Moyuka Uchijima.

With her triumph over Zhang at the Wuhan Open, Gauff has just achieved a feat no other woman has ever managed in tennis.

The 21-year-old is now the first player ever to reach five consecutive quarterfinals at WTA 1000 events since the format’s introduction in 2009.

Gauff made the semifinals of the China Open in her debut at the tournament in 2023, and went on to win the title in Beijing during the 2024 season, before reaching the final four in 2025.

She made her first appearance in Wuhan last year, advancing to the semifinals before falling to defending champion Aryna Sabalenka.

Now, Gauff will hope to go one step further this year, but she is on a collision course with both Iga Swiatek and Sabalenka.

In the quarterfinals of the 2025 Wuhan Open, Gauff will take on Laura Siegemund, who has enjoyed an impressive campaign so far.

After advancing via a walkover in her opening bout with Dayana Yastremska, Siegemund knocked out fifth seed Mirra Andreeva.

The German then came through a second-set tiebreak against Magdalena Frech in the round of 16 to set up the clash with Gauff.

Siegemund has only met the two-time major winner twice before at tour-level events, with their most recent match coming at the 2023 US Open, which she lost to the eventual champion in three sets.
