Metronet has announced a major investment to fund an ultra-high speed fiber network expansion in Jackson, Summit Township, Vandercook Lake, and Blackman Township.

Applauding the news was John Griffin, Summit Township’s supervisor.

“We’re excited to see this kind of private investment in our community,” Griffin said, according to Metronet’s Oct. 8 release. “High-speed internet is critical for life today and Metronet’s expansion brings greater opportunity for residents and businesses in our region.”

Construction will begin on the project this month, Metronet said. Backing the effort is a $48 million private investment, according to Metronet.

Further network construction in multiple neighborhoods will occur over the coming months, according to Metronet.

Michele Johnson, new market development manager at Metronet, said the announcement marks the latest exciting milestone for Metronet as a company.

Metronet is also currently undertaking construction efforts in over 40 Michigan communities, the company said.

Lansing, Grand Rapids, and Portage are among the communities where construction is ongoing, according to Metronet.

Metronet currently has a partnership with T-Mobile Fiber, which offers plans starting at $55 a month, Metronet’s release said.

Meanwhile, commercial services will be offered by Metronet directly, and the company says they can deliver speeds up to 10 Gbps for local businesses.

In total, homes and businesses in over 300 communities have access to Metronet fiber, according to the company’s announcement.
