History

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Four individuals and two doubles teams advanced in their brackets as the Cornell women’s tennis team opened competition at the 2025 ITA Northeast Regional Championships with several strong early results through two days of play at Yale’s Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.

Freshman Dylan Gelber advanced through the qualifying draw with convincing wins over Rhode Island’s Kajsa Helgesen (6-1, 6-1) and Dartmouth’s Lauren Han (6-2, 6-1) before carrying that momentum into the main draw, where she defeated Boston College’s Leyden Games 6-4, 6-4. In doubles, Gelber and senior Emma Baker teamed up for an 8-5 first-round victory over Syracuse’s Constance Levivier and Haram Kim.

Sophomore Andrea Martinez De Los Rios also made a strong run in singles, topping Fairfield’s Sarah Liu (6-1, 6-1) and Rhode Island’s Anastasi Pettersson (6-4, 1-6, 6-3) to reach the main draw before falling to Dartmouth’s Alexandra Orlins in three sets. Cornell’s Tanya Fan earned a three-set win in the qualifying round before bowing out in consolation play, while senior Gia Graziano and Baker each fell to seeded opponents in the opening round.

In main draw singles, Michelle Ryndin, Sage Loudon and Victoria Zhao each opened with straight-set victories. Ryndin downed Brown’s Daniella Benbaraham 6-3, 6-4; Loudon defeated Lehigh’s Emma Sanchez 6-4, 6-2; and Zhao edged Binghamton’s Lauren Kettlewell 6-4, 7-6.

In doubles, Loudon and Martinez cruised past Providence’s Flora Eidson and Allison Root 8–0, while Ryndin and Zhao fell in their opener to Syracuse’s Nelly Knezkova and Anastasia Sysoeva.

Competition continues Saturday with main draw singles and doubles action.
