Recently, Adair Witmer and her family were climbing into their car outside their cottage in Falls, Pennsylvania, when Witmer’s daughter, Ashley, noticed something in the road ahead.
Ashley quickly got her family’s attention and pointed toward a feathered lump on the pavement.
“We couldn’t believe it,” Witmer told The Dodo.

The wayward visitor was a great horned owl. Witmer and her family immediately suspected something must be wrong. Why was this owl out during the day? And why was he sitting in the middle of the road?

Witmer’s youngest daughter, Christine, quickly contacted their local game commission for backup. With help from their neighbors, the group gently draped a blanket over the owl and moved him to the safety of a carrier while they waited for an expert to arrive.
A few minutes later, a game commission officer got to the scene. He examined the owl and transferred him to a safe container.

The officer suspected the owl was a juvenile who wasn’t yet strong enough to fly. He decided to take the bird back to the commission’s animal shelter for a few days, where he could rest and recuperate before his eventual release.
Witmer and her family were glad that the owl was in good hands.
“We were relieved, to be sure!” Witmer said.
Thanks to this family’s compassion, this beautiful great horned owl is out of harm’s way and headed toward brighter days.
