The United States Under-20 men’s national team has reached a familiar stage at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup, with Sunday’s quarterfinal against Morocco serving as a border of sorts.
On the men’s side, the U.S. U20s have made it to the quarterfinal of the U-20 World Cup (which is held once every two years) nine separate times but taking the next step has been immensely difficult. Only once, in 1989, has the U.S. advanced to the semifinals, and each of the team’s last five U-20 World Cup trips have ended in a heartbreaking quarterfinal defeat.
However, this year’s team may be equipped to go further. While the U.S. has topped its group on several previous occasions, this may be the most experienced group of young pros that U.S. Soccer has been able to send to the tournament. Wins over traditional powers like France and Italy have underlined what this young group is capable of, with the USYNT posting 3-0 wins over both of those nations while in Chile (which is hosting the event).
Head coach Marko Mitrović is lead by Benjamin Cremaschi, a former teammate of Lionel Messi’s at Inter Miami who is currently on loan with Parma in the Italian top flight. Despite being a two-way midfielder, Cremaschi has stood out on the attacking side at the U-20 World Cup, and currently leads all players with five goals.
