In a poignant Viennese waltz that she shared with her father Timothy Chiles and her professional dance partner Ezra Sosa, Olympic gold medalist Jordan Chiles emotionally impacted the four judges and earned steady scores on week five of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” on Tuesday.
Judge Carrie Ann Inaba addressed both Timothy and Jordan in her admiration of their and Sosa’s performance to “Daughters” by John Mayer.
“The reverence that I just witnessed was profound,” Inaba said. “The respect and love you showed for your daughter in that dance, by showing up and pretty much doing the whole dance, was pretty incredible. You (Jordan) are blossoming into something spectacular.”
Judge Derek Hough praised the finesse of the performance, which earned Chiles and Sosa eight out of 10 points from each judge to rank them fifth of the 10 couples for the night.
“There was a tenderness,” he said. “It was simple. There was a care to it. It was a really beautiful dance.”
Guest judge Kym Johnson noted Chiles’ breadth of movement and extension, and commended Sosa for integrating Timothy so effectively in the performance.
“You really took a risk in having them dance together solo for quite a long time, but it paid off,” said Johnson to Sosa.
Johnson added that Chiles has the skill and gusto to advance to the final.
“You are a beautiful dancer and you have the determination to go all the way to the end,” she said.
Like Inaba, judge Bruno Tonioli complimented both father and daughter, and as in previous weeks, he highlighted Chiles’ improvements as the season progresses.
“Elegance, style and poise,” Tonioli said. “Sir, you’ve got it, and your daughter (too). I’m so proud of her because what she’s done from the beginning has been brilliant. She gets better and better and better.”
Chiles said she does not know what her life would have been like had her father not enrolled her in gymnastics so many years ago, leading to outlets such as “Dancing with the Stars” that she is enjoying.
“I don’t think I would be this humble girl who has the opportunity to have a dance on the biggest show of her career, and to understand that every little girl should enjoy their moments with their fathers,” Chiles said.
