MONTREAL – The McGill Martlets marked Seniors Day with an emotional and crucial 3-1 victory over visiting Sherbrooke in RSEQ women’s soccer action Sunday at Percival Molson Stadium. The result lifted McGill (4-5-4) past Sherbrooke (4-6-3) into fourth place and the final playoff position in the eight-team conference, with one regular season game left to play.

First-half goals from Chloe Renaud in the 35th minute and Alex Hughes-Goyette in the 42nd gave McGill a 2-1 lead at the break after Charlotte Larrivée had replied for Sherbrooke just before halftime. Poppy Honeybone sealed the result with a third McGill tally in the 57th minute.

Goalkeeper Ann-Stéphanie Fortin made two saves for the victory, while Sherbrooke’s Alexandrine Noël turned aside four of seven shots faced. Each team earned five corner kicks, and McGill held a slim edge in fouls, 9-8. Cautions were shown to McGill midfielder Emma Inciarte in the 38th minute and Sherbrooke defender Raphaëlle Dolbec in the 57th.

A pre-game ceremony honoured seven graduating Martlets playing their final home match. that group included Arianne Lavoie, Elisabeth Pronovost, Aaliyah Kamdar, Alexandra Hughes-Goyette, Giselle De Leon and Chloe Renaud.

The Martlets can clinch a playoff berth outright with a win at Bishop’s (2-8-3) in a 1 p.m. matinee on Oct. 19. The last-place Gaiters, however, held McGill to a 0-0 draw in their previous meeting on Sept. 21 at Molson Stadium.

As the RSEQ heads into its final weekend, Montreal (12-0-1) visits UQAM (4-6-3), Laval (7-5-1) travels to Sherbrooke (4-6-3), and UQTR (5-8-0) meets Concordia (5-5-3). Montreal and Laval have already secured playoff spots, while McGill, Concordia, Sherbrooke, UQAM and UQTR remain in a fierce battle for the final two postseason berths.
