Holger Rune’s campaign at the Stockholm Open ended in heartbreak after retiring due to injury in his semifinal clash with Ugo Humbert.
The Dane took the first set against Humbert, but hurt his foot during a point at 2-2 in the second set, and immediately called the physio.
Rune‘s final four clash with the Frenchman was in doubt after his quarterfinal match with Tomas Martin Etcheverry, in which he had his leg strapped during a medical timeout before issuing a concerning fitness update.
Despite the scare, he decided to continue his pursuit of his second ATP title of the season in Stockholm, but ultimately could not carry on against Humbert after suffering the injury.

Following Rune’s retirement, Humbert said in his on-court interview: “It was not the way I wanted it to win.
“It’s a shame, and I’m super disappointed for Holger. I hope he is going to be ok. I wish him a really speedy recovery. It was a great match, but I’m really sorry, I don’t have to talk much.”
Humbert conceded the first set 6-4, and admitted the scoreline told the full story.
“He was playing a little bit better than me,” said the fourth seed. “He was serving well. But yeah, I don’t want to talk too much. I’m really sorry for Holger.”
Holger Rune’s campaign at the Stockholm Open
Following an indifferent Asian swing, Rune was enjoying a strong start to his indoor hard-court season, in which he has historically enjoyed success.
He picked up a straight-sets win over Marton Fucsovics and fought through pain to come back from a set down to beat Etcheverry.
Until the injury, Rune looked promising in his semifinal with Humbert and was closing in on his third final of the year, but it was not to be in the end.
After the Stockholm Open, Rune was scheduled to play at the Swiss Indoors in Basel.
