KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Senior Bridget Stammel continues her pursuit of a three-peat singles title and is one of five Commodores moving on to the semifinals at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships hosted by Tennessee.
The No. 27 ranked Stammel and freshman Mia Yamakita both extended their singles runs from opposite sides of the bracket. Stammel began her day with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Tennessee’s Saray Yli-Piipari. She then followed by eliminating another Volunteer, No. 121 Vanesa Suarez, 6-2, 6-1. Stammel has yet to drop a set in singles play and owns a 48-17 game advantage over her regional opponents.
Yamakita made it three wins over Tennessee opponents after downing Elim Yan 7-6 (3), 6-3. The freshman, who also entered Sunday having not lost a set, looked to keep that momentum going in her second match of the day. But after taking the opening frame 6-3 over No. 20 Zoe Hammond of Kentucky, the Wildcat evened the score with a 6-4 victory in the second set. In her first three-set match of the tournament, it was Yamakita who hung on in the third 7-5 to stay alive in the singles draw. The victory marks the first for Yamakita over a ranked opponent, and is the highest ranked singles win of the fall season for the Dores so far. Both Stammel and Yamakita are now one round away from securing qualification into the NCAA Singles Championship.
In doubles, No. 12 ranked graduate Célia-Belle Mohr and sophomore Sophia Webster showed no signs of slowing down. The top-seeded pair quickly moved past Purdue’s Emmi Kolyszko and Kathryn Wilson 8-3 and have not given up more than three games to opponents in a match. Yamakita and freshman Erin Pearce, the No. 43 ranked duo, punched their ticket to the semifinals with an 8-6 defeat of Alice Otis and Lika Persypkina of Louisville.
The singles semifinals come first tomorrow and are set to begin at 9 a.m. Stammel goes up against Kentucky’s No. 57 Julia Zhu while Yamakita will face No. 34 Leyla Britez Risso of Tennessee. Both doubles semifinal matches will showcase a Vanderbilt-Tennessee matchup; Mohr and Webster are set for an 11:30 a.m. start and will take on Francesca Mattioli and Maeve Thornton ahead of Pearce and Yamakita versus No. 17 Catherine Aulia and Britez Risso at noon.
