Like father, like daughter. Apple Martin, daughter of Coldplay singer Chris Martin and actor/Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow (herself no slouch in the music department; see: Glee, Country Strong) just surprised bar patrons in Nashville by popping onstage to sing a few tunes. No, she didn’t move to Music City to start a career as a country artist; she’s a student at nearby Vanderbilt University.
On Friday, October 17, 21-year-old Apple joined the band Jade Street, a duo made up of two of her fellow students, onstage at the venue Cannery Hall for their song “Satellite,” which will be released as a single later this month (listen to a clip here and see pics from the gig here). According to a campus publication, Martin was in the audience, and Paltrow commented on the video of Apple singing using the heart-eyes emoji, showing that she has the full support of her parents as she branches into music. The younger Martin has also recently dipped her toe into modeling, landing gigs with Self-Portrait and the Gap. Not a bad gig for a college girl.

Apple Martin has opened up before about her love of singing, telling Interview that she’s involved in an on-campus cabaret group and adding, “I have a very low voice so whenever we’re doing harmonies it’ll be like, Alright, it’s the boys and Apple.” In the same conversation, she reflected on her choice to pursue a career in the public eye…or not. “It’s interesting because I grew up with that uneven balance of getting out of the airport with my mom and being bombarded with cameras, and then just being a normal kid,” she recalled, adding, “I don’t think we need another celebrity child in the world.”
These days, though, she says, “I just try to do what feels right and block out anything regarding me in the news to the best of my ability. And I’m getting a lot better at being like, Fuck it. I’m not going to be scared. I just want to do what seems fun and figure my life out.” A song with friends seems like just the right start.
