Kotzen and Palta Advance to ITA Northeast Regional Quarterfinals

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Columbia men’s tennis team had a strong showing at the ITA Northeast Regional, concluding on Tuesday. Seniors Nicolas Kotzen and Sachin Palta highlighted the Lions’ strong play, advancing to the quarterfinals in singles. 

The tournament opened on Friday with the Lions boasting a perfect day, winning all eight singles matches and all five doubles competitions. The Lions’ newcomers boosted Friday’s strong play. Aditya Govila, Jakub Katuch, Andrew Ena, and Abhishek Thorat all won their opening rounds, with three doing it in straight sets. 

The tournament resumed on Saturday with Palta defeating Monmouth’s Alex Martinez Sans 6-2, 7-5. Govila took down NJIT’s Maxime Hankings 6-2, 6-4. Boosarwongse made quick work of Delaware’s Euan Mackenzie 6-0, 6-3. Kotzen and Thorat also earned straight-set wins. Kotzen defeated Penn’s Nischal Spurling 6-4, 6-2, and Thorat defeated Princeton’s Sawyer Severance 6-1, 6-0. 

The round of 16 saw Palta and Kotzen come out on top with straight-set wins. Palta defeated Saint Joseph’s Ernesto Ruy 6-2, 6-3. While Kotzen soundly defeated Penn’s Shaurya Bharadwaj 6-1, 6-0. 

Columbia’s two seniors saw their tournament run come to an end in the quarterfinals, with Palta falling 7-6(8-6), 6-3 to Princeton’s Paul Inchauspe. Kotzen fell to Princeton’s Sebastian Sec, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. 

In doubles play, the Lions’ duo of Palta and Boosarwongse advanced to the quarterfinals. Columbia also saw the duo of Jordan Change and Andrew Kotzen advance to the round of 16.

Columbia returns to action Friday. Four Lions will travel to Rome, Ga., to participate in the Rome Tennis Center Collegiate Invite. Four other members of the squad will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to play in the Alabama Crimson Tide Fall Challenge.
