Bell Canada BCE-T and Telus Inc. T-T customers with Google GOOGL-G devices from the Pixel 7, 8, 9 and 10 families experienced difficulties calling 9-1-1 on Thursday, the telecom companies said.

Telus spokesperson Richard Gilhooley said the issue, which lasted several hours, stemmed from a Google software update. The total number of affected customers is unknown.

Bell spokesperson Ellen Murphy said she became aware of the issue late Thursday morning. Just before 5 p.m., the company posted on X that 9-1-1 service had been fully restored to its customers after working with Google to address the issue.

9-1-1 service has been fully restored for customers with Google Pixel devices in the 7, 8, 9 and 10 families. Thank you for your patience as we addressed this matter.

At 7 p.m. on Thursday, Mr. Gilhooley said that Telus was still actively working on a resolution with Google and had informed 9-1-1 call centres in the areas it services. “They are now logging emergency calls from Pixel 7, 8, 9 and 10 users and initiating callbacks.”

Zac Carreiro, a spokesperson for Rogers Communications Inc., confirmed none of the company’s customers were affected.

Ms. Murphy said Bell’s network teams will conduct a post-mortem on the event, adding that she couldn’t recall another instance in which an issue with the telecom’s service was directly linked to a specific type of device.
