PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team exited day one of the Intercollegiate Tennis Asssociation (ITA) Ivy Conference Masters tournament with a perfect record of 1-0 in doubles play and 4-0 in singles play.

The tournament, which is being hosted at Penn’s Hamlin/Hecht Centers, is a battle of the teams in the Ivy League, with a spot in the NCAA Championships on the line.

The doubles team of senior Matthew Rutter and freshman Nischal Spurling got the day started on the right foot, defeating the Yale team of Troy Kudrjavtsev and Edward Liao, 8-4.

The singles portion proved to be just as effective, with Rutter and sophomore Shaurya Bharadwaj dispatching their opponents in straight sets.
