For the 17th season in a row under head coach Todd Maas, Sturgeon Bay’s boys soccer team has won a WIAA regional championship.
The No. 1-seeded Clippers defeated No. 8-seeded Peshtigo, 6-2, in Saturday’s Division 4 title game at Clark Field.
Sturgeon Bay’s Jaxzen Bleck scored 2:09 into the first half and tallied another goal at 19:26 to give the Clippers a 2-0 lead.
After the Bulldogs’ Connor Radtke scored at the 28:55 mark to cut Sturgeon Bay’s lead in half, the Clippers closed out the final five minutes of the first half with goals from Aiden Benziger and Ashton Benzinger to give Sturgeon Bay a 4-1 lead at intermission.
Peshtigo scored first in the second half on a goal by Wyatt Denny, then the Clippers closed out the scoring with a pair of goals from Finn Stevenson, with the latter being on a penalty kick, to seal the victory.
Sturgeon Bay, which improved its overall season record to 18-3-2, next hosts a sectional semifinal Thursday at 7 pm against No. 4-seeded Kiel, which won its regional title game Saturday against No. 5-seeded Gibraltar/Sevastopol, 2-0.
The Clippers defeated the Raiders 4-0 when the two teams faced each other on Sept. 5. The semifinal winner advances to the sectional title game Nov. 1 at 1 pm in Kiel against the semifinal winner between No. 2-seeded Lourdes Academy/Valley Christian of Oshkosh and No. 3-seeded Appleton Xavier.
