Mexican icon Canelo Alvarez has revealed the five greatest fighters of all time in his opinion.
The 35-year-old from Guadalajara has proved himself to be one of the best fighters of his era in recent years, capturing multiple world titles in four weight classes since making his professional debut back in 2005 as a 15-year-old.
Canelo became the first fighter within the ‘four belt era’ to win the undisputed world super-middleweight championship when he stopped Caleb Plant in the penultimate round of their Las Vegas showdown in November of 2021.
The Mexican great achieved this feat for the second time earlier this year when he outpointed Cuba’s William Scull in Riyadh, although he would go on to lose his crown and suffer the third defeat of his career to Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford last month.
In a feature with DAZN, Canelo revealed who he believes are the five greatest fighters to have ever laced up a pair of gloves, a list which includes one of his former rivals.
“Muhammad Ali … Sugar Ray Leonard … [Sugar] Ray Robinson … [Floyd] Mayweather … [Marvin] Hagler”
Canelo shared the ring with Mayweather back in 2013, suffering the first defeat of his professional career to the five-division world champion when they clashed for the WBC light-middleweight title.
Leonard and Hagler played a key role throughout boxing’s golden era during the 1980s where they both became a member of ‘The Four Kings’ alongside Thomas Hearns and Roberto Duran.
Robinson is often considered to be the greatest fighter ever, with many ranking him ahead of the likes of Mayweather and Ali. He became a world champion on six occasions during his career, which saw box on more than 200 occasions along the way.
