Sayville native Jack Coan has seen major playing time in the Canadian Football League over the past two weeks, taking the field for the Saskatchewan Roughriders as the team rests starters after clinching home-field advantage in the playoffs weeks ago.

Coan, a backup quarterback, entered games to gain live-game reps and stay sharp in meaningful situations. In his recent appearances, he completed 10 of 21 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown, and scored two rushing touchdowns in short-yardage situations.

“I was thankful for the opportunity I got and I had a blast being out there,” Coan told SportsCage.

He also told reporters, “You really focus on yourself, try to do the best you can do and see what happens from there … I’ve taken a step from last year.”

Coan’s football journey began at Sayville High School, where he starred as the Golden Flashes quarterback for four seasons. He went on to play at Wisconsin, leading the Badgers to the 2020 Rose Bowl, before transferring to Notre Dame for his final college season and guiding the Irish to the Fiesta Bowl and a top 10 finish in the polls.

After going undrafted in the NFL, he played a season in the XFL with the San Antonio Brahmas before joining heading north of the border to compete for a Grey Cup championship with the Roughriders.

With the Roughriders set to enter the playoffs as a top seed in the league’s West Division, Coan remains in a backup role.
