There’s the fame, of course. And the pride. The athletic feat. Plus giving heart-bursting joy to an entire nation that’s pinning three decades of hopes and dreams to this very moment.

But what else exactly do players get when they win the World Series?

The Toronto Blue Jays have a very real chance of bringing home the title in Game 6 against the heavily favoured Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night. With a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series, Canada’s team is just one win away from securing its first championship since 1993.

If they lose Friday, they’ll battle it out in Game 7 on Saturday. Either way, one of the teams will be hoisting a trophy in the air and getting the biggest share of a cash bonus.

Here’s what to know about baseball’s biggest prize.

Toronto is abuzz with hope that the Blue Jays can secure their first World Series title in more than 30 years. A win in either Game 6 or 7 in Toronto and the Jays will have defeated the defending champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Commissioner’s Trophy

Not to be confused with the WNBA’s Commissioner’s Cup, the Commissioner’s Trophy is Major League Baseball’s iconic reward for winning the championship.

Unlike hockey’s Stanley Cup, a new Commissioner’s Trophy is created every year. Tiffany and Co. has been crafting it since 2000. The trophy features 30 flags, one representing each team.

The flags rise above a sterling silver ball that features 24-karat gold vermeil stitching to represent the stitching on a baseball, according to the Tiffany website, plus latitude and longitude lines to symbolize the world, according to MLB.com.

It takes about six months to craft the trophy, Tiffany states.

A World Series trophy has been awarded since 1967, when the St. Louis Cardinals won the title, but it only got its name in 1985, when it was won by the Kansas City Royals.

The Commissioner’s Trophy used to be presented in the clubhouse, but that changed in 1997, when the presentation was held on the field for the first time after the Florida Marlins won, according to MLB.com.

And it used to be that the trophy was only presented on the field if the home team won, but these days it’s presented in front of the crowd either way.

Last year, for instance, the L.A. Dodgers won the World Series in New York, and baseball commissioner Rob Manfred presented the trophy on a platform quickly erected over second base (with a mostly empty stadium in the background).

But wait, there’s more! Specifically, cash.

As MLB.com points out, each post-season team receives a share of the money earned from playoff gate receipts, but the World Series champion gets the biggest cut. The next-highest percentage goes to the runner-up.

Here’s how MLB breaks down how the players’ pool is formed:

50 per cent of the gate receipts from the Wild Card Series games.60 per cent of the gate receipts from the first three games of the Division Series.60 per cent of the gate receipts from the first four games of the League Championship Series.60 per cent of the gate receipts from the first four games of the World Series.

The World Series champion gets 36 per cent of the pool, the losing World Series team 24 per cent, each LCS loser 12 per cent, each Division Series loser 3.3 per cent and each Wild Card Series loser 0.8 per cent.

Players from each team vote on how many full or partial shares to award to other club personnel, MLB explains.

Last year saw a record pool of $129.1 million US, with the L.A. Dodgers’ shares totalling $477,441 for each player. Los Angeles voted 79 full shares, 17.49 partial shares and $405,000 in cash awards in dividing their pool of $46.47 million.

All players and managers eligible for the World Series who were with the team or on an injured list from June 1 or later get a full share.

As Sportico points out, the 2025 World Series could challenge last year’s record pool, given the price of tickets.
